How to get a Rhodes Scholarship?

The conditions to successfully receive a Rhodes Scholarship is not global. Different countries should have different criteria.


However, 4 criteria have been used since the beginning of the scholarship. You must strongly pursue 4 Rhodes Scholarship standards, which have been the template for selecting candidate since the beginning of the scholarship, as the following.
  1. literary and scholastic attainments;
  2. energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
  3. truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
  4. moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
Secondly, you must be a citizen of 14 specified countries where the Rhodes Scholarship are currently supported. Those countries are Australia | Bermuda| Canada| Germany| Hong Kong| India| Jamaica & Commonwealth Caribbean| Kenya| New Zealand| Pakistan| Southern Africa (South Africa and neighbours Botswana| Lesotho| Malawi| Namibia and Swaziland| USA| Zambia| and Zimbabwe.

Different countries has limited number of student allocation each year. For example, USA has 32 scholarships and Canada has 11 and Southern Africa has 10 scholarship each year. Number of allocation as of 2011 are shown below.

What is Rhodes Scholarship

Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international graduate scholarship program in the world. It is named after Cecil Rhodes, a successful businessman from England and the founders of the biggest diamond company De Beers. The scholarship was established after Cecil passed away in 1902.

The Rhodes Scholarship offers a scholarship to international student all over the world to study in the graduate or postgraduate level at the university of Oxford in England. The tuition supported by Rhodes trust.

Other than being the oldest scholarship,  Rhodes Scholarship is also the "world's most prestigious scholarship" guarantee by many reliable sources.


There are approximately 7,000 people all over the world who have been graduated by Rhodes Scholarship since its beginning. Many other countries set up similar scholarships later on to honor their great people or instituion such as Kennedy Scholarship in USA etc.
